Can I install an inflatable pool on my terrace?

Jun 3, 2020 | Uncategorized

First of all, it must be taken into account that a portable pool of about 60 centimeters high, reaches 600 kilos per square meter. The structure of residential buildings is built to withstand an overload of about 240 kilos per square meter, which corresponds to the approximate weight of the furniture and the people who will use the dwelling.

“In no case is it designed to support the weight of a swimming pool or a jacuzzi, nor that of the people who will use it”

A portable pool of about 60 centimeters high reaches 600 kilos per square meter, which could reach 750 kilos with the weight of the users. Three times what a modern structure is prepared to support.

The exception: the small swimming pools for newborns. These structures, with a water level that does not exceed 15 or 20 centimeters, can be installed without problems.

But … what consequences can occur if I install an inflatable pool?

This depends a lot on the type of structure, its state of maintenance and age. In terraces of relatively new buildings and without previous pathologies it can generate problems of pavement breakage, humidity, corrosion of the reinforcements and damage to the sanitation installation. If the overload is very high, collapse is very likely, according to the institution.

In the case of structures prior to the 80s or with previous affectations, the probability of collapse of the structure is very important, given that it has lost benefits and the beams may be affected by humidity problems that have reduced their capacity.

If a malfunction occurs, who is responsible for fixing it?

Usually the terraces are common elements of the communities, that the owner is only authorized to enjoy them and, therefore, that the cost of any repair will fall on all the owners of the property and not on those who make a totally inappropriate use.

Therefore, it is essential that the community claims the owner who wants to install an inflatable pool, a certificate of strength to a technician, specifying the resistant characteristics of the floor and the weight limitations that it can support without causing damage to the structure of the building.
